ILLUMINATE

LIFE Senior Services

LIFE Senior services created a buzz through their fundraising drive that was infectious among staff and program participants alike. Their events allowed for broad participation, featured United Way speakers, and created a fun atmosphere. Senior Center members and residents at their Vintage Housing were eager to show support for this campaign that grew by 26% over last year. LIFE Senior Services also met the 9% for 99 Years Challenge, increasing their giving in celebration of Tulsa Area United Way’s 99th year.

Broken Arrow Seniors

Broken Arrow Seniors refreshed their fundraising drive, met the 9% for 99 Years Challenge, and created a stronger culture in the process in 2023. They even gained media attention through the Great Ladle Throwdown, which brought together multiple companies and nonprofits to host a chili cookoff open to the entire community. They had personal conversations with employees to help them understand the scope of United Way’s work - and how their internal participation in the fundraising drive impacts their members. BA Seniors said, "Through our workplace fundraiser, our employees have become more aware of the organizations that help our members in need," and, "Our employees learned that their donations not only support the organization they work for but also provide support to many other organizations that make a very real and life-changing impact on hundreds of lives."

SMALL BUSINESS

Commerce Bank

The mighty effort at Commerce Bank not only featured corporate giving, earned an 80% participation rate among employees, and met the 9% for 99 Years challenge, it was also filled with heart and personal stories. When asked what impacted participation, they said several employees gave personal testimonies about how United Way and its partners have enriched their own lives. One employee said, "It‘s not if, but when someone in your circle will receive help from a United Way partner."

MID-SIZE BUSINESS

HUB International

Each year, HUB International employees look forward to bonding with their peers during United Way fundraising events, which feature games, snacks, and team building. This strong effort includes year-round activities and, in 2023, a popular Adam Sandler theme. HUB International also has a special affinity for Tulsa Area United Way nonprofit partner Tulsa Boys Home, and it has become tradition for employees to spend their time there during Fall Day of Caring. A group of Producers even went above and beyond to provide the boys with gifts for the holidays.

GREEN COUNTRY BUSINESS

Muscogee Nation Gaming Enterprises

Muscogee Nation Gaming Enterprises is truly leading the way for first-time campaigns. This significant effort featured special events, a paid time off incentive, and impactful educational sessions. Perhaps the most memorable feature of this year’s fundraising drive was the Harvest Festival. Employees came together to enjoy festival food, games, auction items, and a pumpkin-decorating contest. Muscogee Nation Gaming Enterprises is passionate about coming together as a team to raise money in support of the community’s need.

Leadership Giving Award

First Oklahoma Bank

Creativity, fun, and chances to laugh were at the center of First Oklahoma Bank’s successful United Way fundraising drive this year, which met the 9% for 99 Years Challenge. A Mario Kart Tournament complete with custom 3D-printed trophies and an Underachiever’s .5K “Race,” and longstanding traditions of a chili cook-off and bake sale featured prominently in their efforts. This year’s campaign was even more special because it is the 50th year that Executive Chairman of the Board, Tom Bennett Jr., has participated in a United Way Campaign. Tom encourages employees to have fun during the campaign and supports activities through his own event participation and donations.

Williams Summit Leadership

D&L Oil Tools

D&L Oil Tools has a legacy of community involvement that began 40 years ago through volunteerism with Tulsa Area United Way nonprofit partners CASA, Child Advocacy Network, and eventually, DVIS. Today, the company has a particular affinity for the Tulsa Day Center and the important work they do for Tulsa and surrounding communities.  Volunteerism is a defining characteristic of D&L Oil Tools founders and employees. This can be seen not only through generous fundraising drive contributions, the company’s employee giving match, and their success in meeting the 9% for 99 Years Challenge, but also through service on Tulsa Area United Way’s Board of Directors and partner nonprofits’ Boards of Directors including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma and The Center for Individuals with Physical Challenges.

2023 Clydella Hentschel Volunteer of the Year Award

Cathy Rogers Gates

Named in honor of the first woman to co-chair the Tulsa Area United Way campaign and start the Day of Caring, TAUW’s signature volunteer program - the Clydella Hentschel Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond to enhance their community impact by engaging in meaningful volunteerism.

Cathy Rogers Gates’ journey is not just a story of professional success, but one of dedication to making a difference in each community she serves.

Now retired from her role as an assurance partner with Ernst & Young, Cathy brought over 30 years of expertise to her profession. She served a diverse range of clients across the Southwest Region, with a focus on retail, transportation, and manufacturing sectors. Whether advising Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) registrants, coordinating financial audits, or managing over 100 professionals, her work was highly trusted.
